Morels for Mother’s Day!

LOCATION:  In our tiny house in Retama Village, in Mission, Texas
WEATHER:  Mostly sunny.  High 90

Is it Mother’s Day, Mothers’ Day, or Mothers Day?  My daughter (equally passionate about correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation as I)  and I exchanged emails with this debate.  Technically it should be plural possessive – Mothers’ Day – as we are celebrating all mothers today.  Hallmark and others normally use the singular possessive form – Mother’s Day.   So, Google to the rescue.  It says that the woman who invented the day in the 1800s wanted it to be Mother’s Day (singular) as a tribute to one’s unique mother.  So, now you know! 

We did the normal Sunday morning routine – with George cooking up grits and eggs while we watched CBS Sunday Morning.  One of their segments was about a collaboration of hospitals and researchers across the country, including a researcher I worked with at Mayo Clinic, that are getting close to a cure for Covid-19, using the plasma of people who have had the virus.  Sure hope that works!

I made Vietnamese pho (soup) for lunch.  A friend down the street told me she is growing Thai basil, so I went to her house to pick some for the pho.  Really made a difference!

Day 2 of THE PROJECT!  It is turning out to be even more difficult than George had originally thought.  He listened to a YouTube explaining how to do it.  He has to chisel out all the KwikSet that is under the tile, until he gets down to the bare concrete.  It is a terrible job.  The shards were flying all over the place.  The entire house is covered with dust.  I made him wear my scuba goggles to protect his eyes from the tile shards.  It took him 6 hours to do 2 tiles.

When I was growing up, my father, like many men in Iowa, had secret spots where they would forage for morel mushrooms this time of year.  He would bring home huge baskets of them and we happily gobbleld them up.  He usually served them battered and fried, with some type of beef.  Pure heaven!

We must have mentioned this to our daughter in Minnesota, who took the initiative to order some for us.  The package arrived on Saturday.  George wanted to eat them with steak, so due to Saturday’s weather, we waited until today to grill a steak to eat with the morels.  He used a paper towel roll to create a wind tunnel so the fire blazed nicely….

I sauteed the morels in butter.  Nothing else.  They were SO delicious. 

DINNER:  Sirloin steak on the grill, morels, a French baguette (that George had baked and frozen last week), and a salad with arugula and raita (a mix of sliced cucumbers marinated in Greek yogurt, turmeric, and cumin).  We opened a Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon that was magnificent to accompany the feast. 

The day culminated with the BBC (PBS) show “Call the Midwife” .  What a great day!

BOOKS:  While George was doing the project, I read…..I finished  “All Adults Here” by Emma Straub.  It is a story about the quirky characters of a family.  5 stars out of 5
